YEAR 13 HISTORIC DOCKYARD TRIP
YEAR 13 HISTORIC DOCKYARD TRIP
On Friday the Year 13 History classes took a trip to the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth which promised to be an unforgettable experience, immersing the students in maritime history, the significance of naval power in British heritage and being a particularly important section of their A levels. Upon arrival, the group was greeted by the impressive sight of HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar. The students roamed through the ship's decks, marveling at the intricate craftsmanship and learning about its storied past. Guided by knowledgeable staff, they were captivated by tales of heroism and strategy that shaped British naval dominance, making history come alive in a way that textbooks could never achieve. Mr Summers can be seen here struggling with the steep stairs in a 260 year old ship!
After exploring HMS Victory, the students moved on to HMS Warrior, a Victorian warship that represented a significant leap in naval technology. As they stepped aboard this hybrid ironclad marvel, they were struck by the contrasts between the wooden warship they had just visited and this steam-powered giant. The interactive exhibits and informative displays deepened their understanding of advancements in naval design and warfare strategies of the 19th century. Engaging in discussions about the evolution of the Royal Navy, the students reflected on the broader implications of naval power in global history, leaving the Historic Dockyard with enriched perspectives and memories they would carry with them in their A level exams, and long after they leave Glyn.
