Reading Challenge

It has been wonderful to welcome back our students this week, and what a busy week it has been! Year 11 have now completed the first week of their pre-published exams, and we have been immensely proud of the maturity which they have shown in the way that they have conducted themselves. Across the school we are now entering a ‘season of assessment’, with Year 9, 10 and 13 all currently preparing for their respective assessments this half term. It is wonderful to see students of all year groups making use of the revision strategies which they have been taught to best prepare themselves.

This month marks ‘Non Fiction November’ and, as you will read about later in the Reading News, the LRC will be promoting a love of reading all things factual in the last two weeks of the month. The theme this year is ‘Why Don’t You?’ which aims to stimulate discussion about hobbies and leisure activities and to encourage young people to try something new. For this year’s competition, students are invited to create a short ‘advert’ for their hobby. This could be a video, a poster, a letter or a leaflet, but the focus must be on ‘why don’t you?’ - in other words, encouraging others to have a go. We are looking forward to seeing the entries of students across KS3 and encourage students of all ages to get involved by using the non fiction reading recommendations to help them get started reading.

In assemblies this week, we discussed one of Glyn’s core values: integrity and how students can contribute within the Glyn community by applying to be a Glyn ambassador. Students from Years 7- 10 can apply to be Ambassadors representing the pillars of Learning and Teaching, Community and Environment and Student Well-Being. We look forward to receiving applications from students and seeing the fantastic incentives that they introduce once they begin their roles, working closely with our Student Leadership Team.
