At Glyn, PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economics) education is a strategically planned programme promoting British values in an inclusive environment through which our young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

It helps to safeguard students, support their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and promotes thoughtful and articulate discussion on relevant issues in their lives.

Glyn School is committed to serving its community, which we recognise is multicultural, multifaith and ever-changing. The curriculum plays a vital role in promoting and reinforcing British values. We enable students to acquire knowledge of, and respect for, British public institutions and services and to appreciate and respect their own and others’ cultures. Students benefit from a number of international visitors, including students from other continents and cultures.

Each Year group, 7 to 11 have one lesson over the two week cycle. PSHCE is taught during Form time in Year 12 and 13. All PSHCE engagements follow a unique set of focus topics and tasks following themes set each half term.

Annual themes

Across the year groups, lesson topics differe, however themes remain and are the focus each half term to grow the students' knowledge and understanding.

  • Autumn Half term 1 Theme: Being ME in my world

  • Autumn Half term 2 Theme: Celebrating Differences

  • Spring Half Term 1 Theme: Dreams and Goals

  • Spring Half Term 2 Theme: Healthy Me

  • Summer Half Term 1 Theme: Relationships

  • Summer Half Term 2 Theme: Changing Me

Curriculum intent

PSHCE aims to support the school curriculum in developing students in their well-being, resilience and character which are the basis of holistic development as they move towards adulthood. The PSHCE programme promotes awareness by educating students about risk so that they can make informed choices as they take more responsibility for their own lives.

It is planned to meet the new statutory guidance for Relationship and Sex Education.

Implementation of PSHCE

Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9 focuses on the evaluation of risk and making informed choices as they grow into adulthood, to be more resilient to the changes that modern life brings and to develop the skills to understand what makes them happy and what to do to develop that happiness. All skills that will make them more resilient to change.

Year 10, Year 11, Year 12, and Year 13 focuses on the evaluation of risk and making informed choices as they work towards post 16, being able to be more resilient to the changes that modern life brings and developing the skills to understand the challenges of life as young adults.

In Year 7, Year 8, and Year 9, the curriculum focuses on:

  • The evaluation of risk and making informed choices as students grow into adulthood.
  • To be able to be more resilient to the changes that modern life brings.
  • To develop the skills to understand what makes students happy and what to do to develop that happiness.
  • Skills to make students more resilient to change.

In Year 10, Year 11, Year 12, and Year 13 the curriculum focuses on:

  • The evaluation of risk and making informed choices as students work towards post 16.
  • To be able to be more resilient to the changes that modern life brings.
  • To develop the skills to understand the challenges of life as young adults.

Sequence of lessons

Personal development is a key focus in PSHCE:

  • Identifying their personal qualities, skills and attributes and their right to personal boundaries
  • Understanding of different types of relationships including online
  • The power of the individual and how that can be used to achieve ‘win-win’ outcomes and how to challenge inappropriate behaviours in others e.g. bullying
  • Understand their rights and responsibilities, especially around consent
  • Development of knowledge of careers
  • Identify how a healthy diet and lifestyle can lead to a healthier adulthood with less risk of getting serious illness

Each student has their own exercise book to keep a record of their engagement and focused tasks, detailing what students have been learning. Reflection sheets are used to review personal growth. Student voice will also be an important assessment tool.

Impact

Students will have an understanding of the world around them. PSHCE allows students to explore attitudes, values, beliefs and the strategies needed to manage issues caused in their lives by the rapidly changing modern world. The impact will be that students are empowered to make decisions that keep them safe in their lives as well as  leaving school with tools to make them resilient and successful and ultimately happy in life.
