Year 10 Student selected for GB in 2023 BMX World Championships
Hugo (10B) is representing Great Britain in the UCI BMX World Championships being held in Scotland this summer.
BMX racing is an exhilarating and adrenaline-fuelled sport that offers a unique combination of speed, skill and excitement.
Hugo started riding BMX late 2021 and competed in his first round of the National Series races in 2022 where he qualified to represent Great Britain. He is currently ranked 3rd in the Southeast and 11 Nationally for his age. Hugo is likely to qualify for the 2024 UCI BMX World Championship in Rock Hill, South Carolina USA
The races consist of 3 motos; each moto begins from a hydraulic starting gate where a maximum of 8 riders of the same age and ability level leave at the same time, pedalling as fast as they can over dirt jumps and 'tabletops', around banked corners, and across the finish line. The winner of the Moto is the racer who crosses the finish line first. The top 4 of each moto are then drawn into quarter and semi-finals before racing in the final to determine the overall winner.
The races are fast, exciting and sometimes carnage with near misses and crashes. The track is 400m long and just 5m wide, it’s seriously bumpy and the Glasgow BMX Centre will put on a spectacular show full of dramatic ups and downs. The world’s very best BMX Riders will fight for every inch of track as they race, jump and wrestle their bikes from the start gate to the finish line in front of a crowd and racing can also be watched via the link below.
