School Sports Day 4 July 2023 - David Weir Leisure Centre, Sutton
On Monday 3 July 2023, Glyn School hosted its annual Sports Day at the David Weir Centre in Sutton, allowing our students the opportunity to experience a range of different athletic events.
The students were well prepared for the range of track, field and games events, as the House Leader and Tutors had pre-selected students for the events.
Two new activities were introduced this year - ‘Endzone’ and ‘Squares'. The 'Squares' game in particular became very competitive during the Year 9 matches, with the teams showing good teamwork, communication and skills.
The first event on the track was the 1500m, producing highly competitive races across all Year groups.
We even had a record breaking performance from Roan (10A) during the Year 10 High jump event. Roan beat the previous school record from 2007 by 1cm, setting a new record of 1.66m. Such a fantastic achievement by him.
At the halfway stage of the day, there were 3 houses Bourne, Carew and St Benet battling it out to be crowned "Sports Day Champions 2023".
Due to the poor weather expected at 3.00pm, we decided to move all the events forward by 30 minutes. Staff and students responded incredibly to the change which still allowed all events to be completed to a high standard; the weather couldn’t dampen the day’s successes!!
The other highlights of the day were the tug of war event, in particular the intense Year 10 event where Carew and St Benet were crowned the winners.
A supporters favourite has always been the 4 x 100m relays. Everyone involved gave a great performance and we saw some superb wins for Year 7 Bourne, Year 8 Bourne, Year 9 Oaks, and Year 10 Bourne. Huge congratulations to all students who were a part of the winning relay teams for their fantastic efforts.
It was also entertaining to watch the heated battle between Charlie (8C) and Sean (8B) to win the shot putt event for their houses, with Charlie coming out on top, winning for his house for the second year in a row!
The final event on the track was the 100m race which was heavily supported by all houses, as everyone moved into the centre of the track to get closer to the action, creating an awesome atmosphere for all the competitors. The races were highly competitive, with some students running a great race.
The results of Sports Day were as follows:
- 1st Place (Gold) - Carew House
- 2nd Place (Silver) - St Benet House
- 3rd Pace (Bronze) - Bourne House
Well done to all students for the amazing efforts seen during your events and for the support you all gave to your fellow peers. A massive thank you also to all the staff for making this year's Sports Day a fantastic event and experience for our students.
