Attendance and Punctuality at our school

Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in a young persons success at school. It plays a vital role in academic achievement, personal development, wellbeing and future opportunities. At Glyn School we are committed to ensuring every student receives the very best education and has the opportunity to flourish both academically and personally.

We believe that excellent attendance and punctuality are essential foundations for success. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve strong outcomes, develop positive relationships, build confidence and fully engage in school life.

Attendance is everyone's responsibility. Parents and Carers, students, staff, SSB members and external partners all have an important role to play in ensuring that children and young people attend school every day they can. We are committed to working closely with families to remove barriers to attendance and provide support whenever it is needed.

Punctuality

Students are expected to arrive at school by 8:30 am to ensure they are in class and ready to learn when the school day begins at 8:40 am.

If a student arrives after before 9:00am, they should go straight to their form room.  If they arrive after 9:00 am they must sign in at Student Reception.

Students who arrive after 8:40 am will be recorded as late.

Students arriving at 9:10 am or later, once registers have closed, will be recorded as absent for that session. This absence will be reflected in the student's attendance record.

Being late to school is disruptive and can have a significant impact on learning. Students who arrive late often miss important instructions, starter activities and opportunities to settle into learning. Repeated lateness can quickly add up to substantial amounts of lost learning throughout the academic year.

Arriving late can also make students feel rushed or unsettled, affecting their confidence, concentration and readiness to learn. Good punctuality helps students start each day positively and make the most of every lesson.

Safeguarding and Attendance

Attendance is not only an educational issue; it is also a safeguarding priority.

Schools have a legal responsibility to know where students are during the school day and to ensure their safety and wellbeing. If a student is absent and we have not received an explanation, we will take prompt action to establish their whereabouts.

As part of our safeguarding procedures, home visits may be conducted to:

• Check on a student's welfare
• Verify the reason for absence
• Offer support to students and families
• Help remove barriers to attendance

Any concerns regarding a student's attendance will be investigated sensitively and promptly to ensure appropriate support is provided.

Where there are unexplained absences, prolonged periods of absence, or concerns regarding a student's welfare, the school may need to involve external agencies to ensure that the child receives the support and protection they need.
