Sports Day 2024
GLYN SCHOOL SPORTS DAY: A CELEBRATION OF SPIRIT AND SPORTSMANSHIP
We are thrilled to share the highlights of this week's Sports Day, held on Wednesday at the David Weir Stadium in Sutton. Despite the overcast weather forecast, the Glyn School community came together for an unforgettable day filled with excitement, competition, and school spirit.
Our students and staff demonstrated incredible enthusiasm and camaraderie, with everyone donning their House colours and cheering on their peers. The atmosphere was electric as competitors gave their all in various track and field events. Teachers and students alike are calling it "the best sports day ever," a testament to the energy and spirit displayed by all participants.
Our eight Houses—Abbey, Bourne, Carew, Derby, Merton, Oaks, St Benet, and Tudor— competed fiercely for the Victor Ludorum trophy. Students showcased exceptional sportsmanship and dedication, living up to the values we hold dear at Glyn School. The event was designed to give every student a chance to shine, and they certainly rose to the occasion.
From endzone and seated volleyball to tug-of-war and the 100m dash, the variety of events allowed every student to find their niche and excel. The venue buzzed with excitement as pupils' enthusiasm and energy were truly contagious.
One of the highlights was the Year 7 and 8 Tug of War competition. This event was extremely popular, with students displaying excellent leadership, dedication, and teamwork.
Another standout moment was the fiercely contested 4x100m relay for Year 9 students. Derby House and Bourne House fielded particularly strong teams, making for a thrilling race. The competition was neck-and-neck, with Cameron A. (9D) from Derby and Sean O. (9B) from Bourne sprinting down the home straight. In a dramatic finish, Cameron A. clinched victory for Derby, showcasing remarkable speed and determination. The support and encouragement from students and staff epitomised the spirit of the day.
Records were broken in the cricket ball throw events. Cam B. (8B) surpassed the previous record with a throw of 53.9 metres. In Year 9, Jack V. (9SB) set a new record with a throw of 61 metres. The Year 10 competition was intensely competitive, with Tristan B. (10B) breaking the record only to have Jake S. (10D) surpass it moments later with a remarkable throw of 66.5 metres.
After a full day of inclusive sports, featuring a wide range of events for all abilities, we celebrated all the students who participated. The winners from each year group—Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, and Year 10 will be announced at next week's end-of-term assembly. Additionally, the overall winning House will be crowned champions. Will Carew retain their sports day championship title from last year?
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in making Sports Day a resounding success. Please enjoy the attached photos, capturing the joy, smiles, and impressive achievements of our students.
