All that glitters is not gold!
Alchemist's Gold Experiment for Chemistry Club for Years 9, 10 and 11
This week in Chemistry Club, we turned copper coins into silver and then gold coins! Of course, it is not real silver and gold; in fact, the 'silver' is zinc and 'gold' is brass.
In this amazing and fun experiment a ‘copper’ coin is dipped into a solution of sodium zincate in contact with zinc. The coin is plated with zinc and appears silver in colour. This ‘silver’ plated coin is then held in a Bunsen flame for a few seconds and the zinc and copper form an alloy of brass. The coin now appears ‘gold’!
Chemistry Club takes place every Thursday lunchtime in S4 from 1.25pm. We have lots of fun demonstrations and experiments, while learning. Chemistry Club is open to all students in Years 9, 10 and 11, so do come along!
