KS3 Science Club - Making Cold Packs
As if it wasn’t cold enough this week, this week our KS3 Scientists made cold packs, similar to cold packs used in the Medical Room if students bump themselves at school.
In a sealed bag, with a small hole in it to prevent explosions, we added bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. As they mix together, an endothermic reaction occurs that absorbs heat from the surroundings and reduces the temperature of the area. This resulted in the liquid in the bag feeling colder.
The students also looked at the milk rocks they made last week. The casein (milk solids) had dried and turned rock hard.
KS3 Science Club meets on Monday lunchtimes from 1.30pm in S9 and is open to all students in Years 7 and 8. Dr Thomassen
