EPSOM COLLEGE V GLYN SCHOOL - WALTON HEATH OLD COURSE - TUESDAY 30 APRIL

Glyn once again faced Epsom College at one of the UK's top 50 courses - Walton Heath. This fixture was played on the Old Course at Walton Heath, designed by fabled golf architect and legend of the game, James Braid and opened in 1903. The Old Course was also the host course for the 1981 Ryder Cup - so be sure to check the attached photos are of Glyn boys and not Nick Faldo or Jack Nicklaus!

The weather was perfect, with glorious sunshine all afternoon and a slight breeze on the very open heathland course. Rob M (12D) opened the first match on the par 3 with a high flighted fade just right of the green, making par he crossed the road and was on his way. Euhwan K (8T) was in the next match. Euhwan smoked his tee shot just short of the green and left of the bunker protecting the approach. He chipped up and sadly missed his return putt, putting him 1 down at the first. Kai K (8B) was the final match off the first tee. Kai hit a lovely long tee shot to just short of the protecting bunker. Pitching up past the hole, he managed to get up and down for par and his match remained all square.

As the matches went around the 18 Heathland holes of this glorious course, things changed rapidly, with the wind whipping in off the right of the course becoming more of a problem, and bringing the notorious heather into play - it made each match quite tense.

Coming down the 18th, the score was 1 Epsom College 1 ½ and Glyn with just ½ a point. Euhwan coming in clutch and saving a ½ point for Glyn. A lot rested on the final match, with Kai currently 1 up coming down the 18th. If Kai could manage to maintain his point the whole match would be halved. Sadly, Kai thinned his approach chip into the bushes at the back of the 18th, and needed to get up and down for the win. Kai missed his putt and their match was halved. Meaning that the final result was Epsom College 2 Glyn 1.

A really great close golf match, with most of the matches coming down to the18th. Well done to all the boys who played, and I hope that you enjoyed it!
